There is an application form to join the library which you complete and give to library staff. They will then demonstrate how to use library services. A copy of our registration form can be downloaded and printed below.
Who can join?
  • All staff employed by Peterborough & Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, local primary and community care organisations or Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Foundation Trust
  • Students on placement with any of the above organisations
  • Doctors on clinical attachments with any of the above organisations
  • Other healthcare professionals on application to the Library Information Services Manager (reference-only access for those based outside the East of England).
Opening hours
Our staffed opening hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, and 9am to 4pm on Friday. Members can access the Laxton Library and its resources at any time - out of hours access can be arranged after joining the library.

2. Library catalogue & borrowing books

Library online catalogue
To search the catalogue go to www.elms.nhs.uk. Choose to search PB Laxton Library for local holdings.
Manage your library account online with the user ID and pin which you receive when registering.
Borrow books
  • at the library enquiry desk
  • using the self-issue machine (with a staff badge and pin / or USER ID(enter in capitals) and pin)

E-books and Online resources

Return books

  • to library staff
  • via the self-issue machine
  • using the green book return box in the main Atrium near the Cash office.

Renew loans

Borrowing rules
Up to 6 items can be borrowed at any one time. Items can be renewed once, provided no other library member has requested them.
Overdue items
Members with overdue items will be contacted by email, telephone, and by post. If after 3 overdue notices the books have not been returned a fee for the administrative work and for the replacement of the items will be charged. 

3. Library training, enquiry service & document delivery

How to find healthcare research 
Training in information skills is provided to groups or as a one-to-one session. Please contact us on 01733 678081 to arrange a convenient time.
 Critical Appraisal skills training, learning how to read research papers, can also be arranged for groups. Please contact us to arrange or to book into a session.  
Register online for your NHS OPEN ATHENS account
Your NHS Open Athens account will give you access to e-journals, databases, e-books, ClinicalKey, Clinical Skills.net, and DynaMed. To register online follow these steps
  1. Use an NHS computer OR use an NHS email address in the online registration form.
  2. Go to this site to register https://openathens.nice.org.uk/
  3. Go to the email account you used to activate the account and set up your password

ClinicalKey, Clinical Skills and DynaMed can also be accessed directly from the Laxton Library pages on the Peterborough and Stamford NHS Staff Intranet.

Enquiry service
Library staff are always ready to answer your enquiries. These can range from undertaking a comprehensive professional search to working with you to develop your skills to do this too. Please contact us, in person or by phone/email, with your requests.
Document delivery
If you need a book or a journal article which is not in the Library, it can be requested for you from another library.
  • Complete a request form for each item you need. Please supply as much information as possible.
  •  You are not charged as requests are free.
  •  We will generally request up to three items per week.
  • Please allow 10 days for your request to be fulfilled, although most items arrive well within that timeframe. If your need is urgent, please let Library staff know when you place your request.

4. Study and IT facilities

These include
 

  • 16 private desk spaces with PCs and several study desks.
  • a black & white printer. Printing is not charged for, but you must bring your own good quality A4 paper. We also sell 30 sheets of A4 for £1.
  • a color scanner attached to one PC. 
  • a multi-functional colour photocopier/scanner that will send items to a Trust e-mail account.
  • a small discussion room which can be booked for joint working.
  • the photocopier is free for library materials during office hours.
Internet access is available from our computers for work and study purposes. All our computers are on the PCH network and require a Trust account and password. If you do not have a Trust account, library staff can log you on to a PC during our staffed hours.

5. Current Awareness Bulletin

This weekly bulletin provides a digest of information focusing on primary care and public health.
