The COMET Library offers training to NHS staff who are based in Luton or Bedfordshire. This includes staff who work in the community, in the public and mental health services.
Training mainly takes place in the hospital but can be arranged at workplace locations if that is more convenient for groups and teams of staff.
The training is currently customised by topic according to the specialism of the attendees. For example a group of speech therapists or dieticians will have demonstrations, examples and tasks that are relevant to their profession.
One to one sessions can also be arranged, either as short introductions to searching and making the most of having an NHS Athens account or comprehensive in depth research sessions suitable for those undertaking dissertations and further research.
The sessions are currently by request, so please make contact to arrange a convenient date and time. Drop in sessions and courses at set times will be offered later in the year.
The training sessions usually cover the following:
- How to find healthcare articles using the databases such as Medline, Cinhal, BNI, Psychinfo
- Searching for systematic reviews using the Cochrane Library
- Making the most of NHS Evidence
- Ten quick ways to keep yourself up to date (currently in preparation)

Information searching skills training and an introduction to the library resources
The library team provides one-to-one training and group training on demand. You can come to us or we can come to you. We can give you an overview of all the resources available to you and/or we can show you how to search the healthcare databases and access full-text articles. This can be in any format you prefer i.e. 10 minute training, learn over lunch, one-to-one or group workshops
We also have 6 iPADS and two mobile routers so that we can access public WiFi even if you don’t have access where you work.
